About the Artist: Rachael McCall is an Australian designer currently based in Downtown Los Angeles. Her recent solo show Frayed at the A+D Museum featured objects and images from a series of on-going obsessions labelled Frayed not Polished. This work aims to challenge the legibility of hard edges, figures and silhouettes by fraying, geometrically and cinematically, as well as, working with different gradients of polish and reflections.
Inherently fatty primitives are disintegrated by a series of ongoing obsessions involving formal addictions to; ripping, rippling, peeling, tearing, synching, stitching, slashing, fraying and wrinkling. In a world of lies, misconceptions, illusions and allusions, Rachael finds Architecture that adds fuzz, friction and distortion unavoidable and enticing.
Rachael teaches advanced design studios and visual studies at SCI-Arc, Southern California Institute of Architecture, and is lead designer for the Hernan Diaz Alonso’s studio HDA-X.
