The item is a sculptural cube. The cube has cut-outs that create an interplay of openings and shapes that defy gravity. In our practice we like the play between the ordinary & the complex. We find ways to make complex objects and shapes from simple ones, and we use ordinary materials in extraordinary ways.
The complex 'pixelated' curved surfaces formed by the cuts inside the cube could have been made with CNC (Computer Numerical Control) software and fabrication tools, but we purposely chose to make them with an agglomeration of hand cut square sticks.
About the artist: M u t u o was established by Jose Herrasti & Fernanda Oppermann in Los Angeles in 2014. Since then we have explored common grounds in our passion for design; in finding extraordinary uses for ordinary materials and methods; in discovering new perspectives; and in creating meaningful impact through architecture.
M u t u o has been searching for different opportunities to foster collaborations and expand the traditional roles of the architecture firm into a more dynamic role.
M u t u o aims to use design as catalyst for social impact. We believe that small, organic interventions have the potential to alleviate big social challenges. We have been developing design solutions that can alleviate the affordable housing crisis and disheartening increase in homelessness in Los Angeles.
