steven andrew kocher is an architect and sculptor focused on the intersection of digital tools and methodology. his work primarily explores a lexicon of minimal geometries manipulated through a set of systematic operations to create technically complex objects. heavily informed by the immaterial, computerized, procedures of architectural practice and the one-dimensional gleam of instagram culture, steven is in search of a methodological practice that places design process, material distinction, object production, and final product on an equal plane. the work presented here, “studies”, is an exploration of this experimentation. the project starts with a rigorous method for formal creation, then recursively revisits the method each time a decision is made in the production of the object. as a result, the final outcome is just as much a product of its methodology as it is an autonomous object. method and object are inseparable and reciprocal, yet the final result can be enjoyed with or without any knowledge of the former process. steven is an associate designer at oda new york responsible for competitions, fabrication, marketing and research. he received his b.s. in architecture at the university of southern illinois in carbondale and his master of architecture degree at the university of pennsylvania.
