gradient machine flipbooks
the gradient machine flipbooks were the result of massing, lighting, and shading experiments in maya and the arnold render engine. the experiments began as a branding study for the fx tv network while creating key art concepts for the second season of the fx series legion. initially comprised of as text, the goal of the experiment was to create a dynamic, shifting color field applied to text that would yield unintended gradient compositions and caustic lighting effects. as the experiments progressed, the forms began to manipulate and consume the individual light sources once the performative nature of the effect(s) was codified. the resulting compositions are set in a darkened studio set to amplify the result of each experiment. a gradient was then extracted from each composition using a distorted 1 pixel wide section through the vertical dimension of the composition. the resulting generative gradients can then be used as a way to track the light sources as the move through and around the experimental volumes.
