Vernacular Town #1
by Camille Ora-Nicole

drawing
Vernacular Town #1 is a pen and ink drawing originally completed on watercolor paper. It is a master plan of a hypothetical town developed as part of an exploration into the Black Vernacular in America. This drawing was completed as part of the methodology development that is taking place prior to opening up the experiment (the Vernacular Project) to the Black community so that they too can have input on what black-designed spaces - towns, streets, houses - could look like. Vernacular Project explores the dimensions of the Black vernacular in the built environment through the arts, community engagement, placemaking, and a healthy dose of dreaming about what could be.
